Abstract
“Coastal erosion, when there is a deficit in the sediment budget, varies because of different coastal process drivers and their magnitudes. However, a common theme in all cases is the importance of elevated water level, caused by high tides, surge (including persistent and storm), infragravity and edge waves, and wave setup, which allows incident waves to reach the upper beach. In places where there are no tides (such as the Baltic Sea), factors such as the water volume in the sea as a whole, may have more pronounced impact on erosion than a high tidal range. In this seminar, the causes of coastal erosion in some marginal seas are explored by exploring the most important drivers in those environments, alongside the ‘pure’ case of high energy open sedimentary coasts. Even though the extent of erosion may be greater in high tidal range and high energy environments, its occurrence in a location that has never experienced it before can be a bigger coastal management problem. Such a situation in the Baltic Sea, for example, may be caused by sustained high water levels accompanied by winds from an unusual direction.”
