Serdecznie zapraszamy do uczestnictwa w kolejnym spotkaniu naukowym z cyklu Szczecin Marginal Seas Webinars.

Tym razem gościem będzie dr Jacob Geersen (Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research w Warnemünde, Germany), w ramach którego zostanie omówiony  temat  “Zatopione budowle z epoki kamienia ukryte w zachodniej części Morza Bałtyckiego“. Webinarium odbędzie się 26 czerwca 2025 r. (czwartek) za pośrednictwem platformy MS Teams o godzinie 14:00

Abstract:
During the late Pleistocene and Early Holocene, when the Weichselian glaciers had retreated, Northern Europe was populated by mobile hunter gatherers. Due to their non-sedentary lifestyle, traces of these societies are difficult to find. In 2021, we discovered a 1 km long stonewall at the seafloor in the Bay of Mecklenburg (Germany) which stands on basal till adjacent to a sunken lake, whose youngest phase was dated to 9143±36 years BP. Combining geophysical surveying, geological sampling, and archaeological expertise, we concluded that the entire structure is likely of anthropogenic origin, representing a drive lane for hunting reindeers during the Late Pleistocene / Early Holocene transition. In the seminar I will discuss the unexpected discovery of the stonewall in the Bay of Mecklenburg, present high resolution marine geophysical and visual data from the structure and inform on planned research projects aiming to identify additional sunken Stone Age structures in the Western Baltic Sea.
