Serdecznie zapraszamy do uczestnictwa w kolejnym spotkaniu naukowym z cyklu Szczecin Marginal Seas Webinars. Tym razem gościem będzie Dr. Matthias Groeger (Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemuende, Germany), który przedstawi temat “Marine heatwaves in the world’s marginal seas – past and future perspective”. Webinarium odbędzie się 22 maja 2025 r. za pośrednictwem platformy MS Teams o godzinie 14:00.

Abstract
“Marine heatwaves (MHWs) were prominently highlighted in the latest IPCC Assessment Report as a serious threat to marine ecosystems. Public awareness of MHWs has grown significantly over the past decade, particularly due to a series of extreme events in the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. However, in marginal seas, this phenomenon remains less well studied—despite the fact that its impacts are likely to be substantial and could have long-lasting economic consequences.
In this presentation, we explore the physical causes of marine heatwaves using the Baltic Sea as a case study, where extensive observational and model data are available. Furthermore, we assess marine heatwave characteristics across 19 different marginal seas worldwide using global Earth system models from the IPCC. The analysis covers the past 150 years and investigates the potential future evolution of marine heatwaves under various climate change scenarios through the end of the 21st century.”
